“My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” – Fall Out Boy:
This song is the first song we encounter as we met Andy and Hayden Grace. Andy is rushing out and Hayden Grace is rushing in–Hayden Grace is slamming doors and showing her teenage angst. It’s also the first of four songs taken directly from Hayden Grace’s competition playlist.
“Just a Fool” – Christina Aguilera Ft. Blake Shelton:
To me this song is Andy’s dating theme song, especially with her latest dating disaster. I can just picture her at the bar, leaning back and taking a shot. What I think is important about the song as it relates to Andy, is that of all the men she has dated since her husband, we realize that it’s not always their fault things don’t work out. At times, Andy has been emotionally unavailable or hesitant, causing her to miss out an opportunity to truly find love.
“Sail” –AWOLNATION:
This is another song taken from Hayden Grace’s playlist as she gets ready for competition. It’s edgy and when played loud it tunes out all the outside noise.
“I Want to Know What Love Is” – Foreigner:
Andy Parker has a second chance at love, but she has to let down her guard and let him in. Who wouldn’t want a second chance at anything, let alone love? Close your eyes for a moment and picture the movie montage of her and Paul in Aspen–snowboarding, ice skating, walking around the town hand-in-hand. Andy taking a moment to peek up at him through her eye lashes as he looks away. It’s the beginning butterflies in a special new relationship.
“Drink You Away” – Justin Timberlake:
Andy Parker hasn’t had it easy–whether it’s Hayden Grace or one of the men in her life. There are times when she needs an added distraction from the everyday. There is a specific scene where Andy is at the bar after having a very awkward dinner and she just needs to get away. The lyrics of this song just sum up her feelings at that very moment.
“Glycerin” – Bush:
This is a song Hayden Grace stole from her dad’s riding playlist. It’s a little old school for her, but music is a powerful tool and can evoke memories. Playing this song gives her the added feeling that he’s there with her–riding side-by-side down the pipe.
“Set Fire to the Rain” – Adele:
I listened to this song a lot when I was writing On the Edge. To me this song embodies what I want for Andy Parker. It’s more than just making lemonade from the lemons life gives you. Andy Parker’s life is in a rut when we meet her. She is going through the motions of raising a daughter, going to work, and dating. Nothing has given her that passion or fire that she once had. Andy’s journey in On the Edge is about finding that spark and finding her way again.
“Just the Way You Are” – Bruno Mars:
We all meet someone that stops us in our tracks. Andy Parker was that person for Paul West. Lyrically this song says everything that Paul is thinking, but can’t come out and tell Andy.
“Radioactive” – Imagine Dragons:
This is the last of the four songs from Hayden Grace’s playlist. This is the song she listens to as she sits at the top of the pipe right before her turn. A little superstitious, Hayden Grace always listens to this song last before she takes one final deep breath, pats her jacket, and then drops into the pipe.
“Hanging by a Moment” – Lifehouse:
Nothing in life is guaranteed and who knows that better than the characters in On The Edge. All life gives us is moments. Sometimes we can string those moments together for a happily ever after and sometimes all we get is a single moment. It’s what we do with those moments that matter. I hope you enjoy discovering this ‘moment’ in time with Andy Parker in On the Edge.
